11: Making Baseball History follows this legendary coach through his 40th and final season (2019) as he leaves his indelible imprint on the game of college baseball. The author, Jim Crosby, in his 45th year of covering Seminole baseball, also delves into Martin’s past achievements revealing how he led his Seminole teams to unmatched heights in the NCAA record books-a story that was 40 years in the making.
"Diamond Jim" Crosby was, for many years, as much a part of Florida State baseball as Dick Howser's "Animals", the clay on the pitcher's mound and the tall, skinny, college baseball icon Mike Martin, known to almost all as "11." A former broadcaster, an attentive, introspective fan, Crosby was also a good listener and a great person to share Martin's long and winding road to become college baseball's all-time winning baseball coach. For those who were around the team - I was fortunate enough to cover seven Seminole seasons - Crosby was always kind, friendly, a guy that had the respect of Martin and his players. As a coach, Martin could be demanding, precise, a stickler for details and running practice the right way.
Crosby recounts his story with affection, humor, insight and the sense of someone who was a witness to college baseball history and was darn glad about it. Martin was never able to win college baseball's big-time prize - a national championship. He got to the title game twice, last time in 1999 (I was there) and it seems so wrong that someone who brought such positivity, humor and warmth to the college game didn't get the ultimate reward. Crosby's book makes it clear that the ultimate reward for Florida State baseball fans was to have Mike Martin in the dugout for all those years, all those wins.
Jim Crosby takes us down memory lane with one of the greatest college baseball coaches in the history of the sport, Mike Martin. As a former player on Coach Martin’s first team, I watched a man become a baseball legend. Jim’s stories brought back wonderful memories that brought smiles, tears, and best of all laughs. Jim was able to convey how Coach Martin progressed through a fabulous career with stories that will live forever. A must read for all baseball lovers and of course Seminole Fans! Go Noles!
When I first heard about this book, I couldn’t wait to get it. I had the privilege to play for Mike Martin and was covered by Jim Crosby. Both are great men and the FSU baseball program under Mike Martin is legendary. This book shares behind the scene stories told by former players.
Under head coach #11 Mike Martin, Florida State became the winningest program in the history of college baseball. Written by a king time broadcaster covering the baseball program, the insights are great!
